  • The terms “gypsy” and “gipsy” are common exonyms for a people group correctly known as the Romani (also spelled Romany or Romani) or Roma.
  • While some Roma have historically welcomed the use of the term “gypsy”, others have found it offensive.
  • For countries whose estimated Roma population is given as a range, both minimum and maximum values are shown. For countries whose estimated Roma population is a single value, said value is listed as both the minimum and the maximum estimate.
  • There exists no official or reliable data regarding the global Romani population. Multiple causes for this shortcoming exist. For instance, some countries do not collect data on ethnicity, and even in countries that do, many Romani decline to officially identify themselves as such for fear of discrimination.
  • Population estimates were updated most recently in 2025. However, estimates for most countries are made independently and may apply to previous years.
