Love and dating have changed significantly during the past few years, particularly with the growth of social media. Today, the national marriage rate is on the decline. During the past few years, the percentage of people getting married in the United States has been steadily dropping. The last time the marriage rate increased when compared to the prior year was 2016. Furthermore, between 2018 and 2019, the number of marriages dropped significantly, by about 5.5 percent. Even though it is true that the marriage rate in the United States is dropping, the divorce rate in the United States is dropping as well. This means that more people who decide to get married are staying married.
The state in the United States with the highest rate of marriage is Nevada. This is likely due to a lot of decisions that people make in Las Vegas. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Nevada also has the highest rate of divorce. Despite the high rate of marriage and divorce in Nevada, both are on the decline during the past few decades. From 2000 to 2019, Nevada saw a drop in marriages of approximately 62 percent. During the same time period, Nevada also saw a decrease in the number of divorces, dropping by approximately 58 percent. Still, Nevada is the national leader in both categories.

Even though the marriage rate in the United States is dropping as a whole, there are some parts of the country that have seen an increase in marriages recently. For example, Washington DC has seen an increase in its number of marriages between 2000 and 2019, where they have risen by approximately 52 percent. Other states with very high rates of marriage include Hawaii, Arkansas, Utah, and Montana.
In contrast, Texas has the lowest marriage rate in the United States, where only 4.9 people out of every 1,000 people are married. Other states with particularly low rates of marriage include Delaware, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Connecticut.
This is an area of significant research, but it probably relates to the change in social norms. In the past, a lot of people would immediately get married if their significant other got pregnant. It was considered to be taboo to have a child out of wedlock. Now, that is not necessarily the case. There are a lot of people who raise children without ever getting married, and there are some people who believe that they do not need to get married just because they want to spend the rest of their life with someone. Because of the significant change in attitude, many people are deciding not to get married even though they might be spending their life with one person.
