  • Data on snake bites are often surprisingly vague. Bites from non-venomous snakes are rarely recorded, and data regarding bites from poisonous snakes are often merged with data on interactions with other toxic/poisonous animals. Additionally, those few studies/sources that do specifically track snake bites often use different methodologies from one another.
  • As a result of these challenges, data from one source often differ significantly from data from a different source.
  • State-level breakdowns shown pertain to data year 1959.
  • Snakebites in the US are highly regional. An analysis of 2016 data found that 82% of snakebites occurred in the South, 11% in the West, 7% in the Midwest, and 1% in the Northeast.
  • Bites from venomous snakes rarely result in death as long as medical attention is sought. Of 65,695 reported venomous snake exposures from 2006-2015, only 31 proved fatal.
  • The National Poison Data System recorded the following snakebite totals for the US as a whole during 2021: 2,287 copperheads, 75 coral snakes, 229 cottonmouths, 1184 rattlesnakes, 524 envenomations from unspecified venomous snakes, and 43 from poisonous exotic (pet) snakes.
