  • Both the definition of what constitutes a mass shooting and the methodologies used to count them vary between sources. Methodological differences such as these lead to significant variations in reported data across various sources.
  • The Rockefeller Institute of Government focuses specifically on public mass shootings in which at least 4 people were killed, excluding incidents such as terrorist attacks perpetrated by organized groups. For instance, it omits the November 2015 shootings in Paris, which were conducted by ISIL, for this reason.
  • In contrast, other sources may adhere to a broader (or narrower) definiton of a mass shooting, which would result in a different range of data.
  • Data may not include the most recent incidents. For example, Serbia experienced two mass shootings in 2023, just two days apart. Sweden experienced the country’s deadliest school shooting in history in February 2025. A father and son in Australia opened fire on Hanukkah celebrants at Bondi Beach in December 2025, resulting in the country’s worst mass shooting since 1996. These incidents fall outside the Rockefeller Institute’s 2024 dataset, which only covers shootings up to 2022, as well as the Crime Prevention Research Center’s data, which is limited to incidents from the years 2009 to 2015.
  • Data shown come from the Rockefeller Institute of Government (RIG) and the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), with additional statistical analysis by fact-checking organization Snopes.
