Uttar Pradesh is a state located in northern India. With a population of 199,812,314 as of 2011 - it is the most populous state in the Republic of India. The population of the state is spread across 18 divisions and 75 districts. Over 16% of the nation’s total population resides in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh has an immense surface area that comes to a total of 243,290 kilometers squared (93,930 square miles). It is also one of the most densely populated states in India, with a population density of about 2,100 people living per square mile.
Hinduism is the most popular religion practiced in the state. It is practiced by nearly 80% of residents. Other religions in Uttar Pradesh include Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Jainism and Buddhism. It has the most Hindus and Muslims in India.
There are more men than women living in Uttar Pradesh. For every 1,000 men, there are 908 women, which is lower than the national average.
Hindi is the state’s official language and is spoken by over 91% of the population. Urdu is the state’s second official language. Many regional dialects are spoken throughout Uttar Pradesh including Awadhi and Braj Bhasha.
Uttar Pradesh has one of the largest numbers of people living below the national poverty line. It was estimated in 2010 that 59 million people lived below the poverty line, by far the most in India. Men in Uttar Pradesh have a higher literacy rate than women, but overall, the total literacy rate of 67.7% falls below the national average.
Uttar Pradesh’s last decennial growth rate exceeded 20%, which is above the national average. Looking at past population growth trends shows that the state’s population shows no sign of slowing down, and it will only be a short time before the population exceeds 200 million and rises to meet the next significant milestone.
