Oscar Winners by Country 2024

By far, the United States tops the list of Oscar winners with over 3,000 golden statues and counting. The youngest American to win an Oscar was Tatum O'Neal (age 10), and the oldest was James Ivory (age 89).

In a distant second place, Italy has taken home 14 Oscars out of 32 nominations. Italy submitted its first film for Oscar consideration in 1942.

France is third in terms of Oscar winners with 12, even though they have submitted more films than any country but the United States.

Japan has produced 5 Oscar winners, including three Honorary Oscars. Drive My Car won Best International Film in 2023.

Four Russians have taken home Oscar trophies. The total includes three winners from the Soviet Union (1963-1991),

Sixth place for Oscar winners by country goes to Germany, with a total of four. German director Edward Berger won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2022.

Out of 65 submissions, Spain has only won four Oscars. Spain has been nominated for Best International Feature Film more times than Italy and France,

All four of Denmark's Oscar wins were in the Best International Feature Film. Denmark has been nominated in both Best Documentary Film (2023) and Live Action Short categories (2023).

The Netherlands has taken home three Oscars for the movies The Assault (1987), Antonia's Line (1996), and Character (1998).

The director Ingmar Bergman has won all 3 Oscars for Sweden for the films The Virgin Spring (1960), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), and Fanny and Alexander (1983).

The Czech Republic has taken home 3 Oscar trophies, including two winners from Czechoslovakia (1964-1991).

Iran has submitted 28 films and won 2 Oscars for the movies Children of Heaven (1999) and A Separation (2012).

Other countries that have taken home only 2 Oscars include Argentina, Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland.

Countries that have only won one Oscar, including Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Algeria, Poland, Canada, Ivory Coast, Taiwan, Chile, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, are rounding out the list.

  • Most Academy Award categories are open only to US films. As such, the United States has won more than 3,000 Oscars since the award's inception. However, as the playing field is unequal, US totals are not shown.
  • Totals shown were calculated using the list of winners of the annual Academy Award for Best International Feature Film from 1947 to 2022 (note: Award ceremony typically took place the following year).
  • From 1947 to 1955, the award was known as a Special/Honorary Award. The name was switched to Best Foreign Language Film Award in 1957 and to Best International Feature Film in 2020.
  • No award was given in 1953.
  • Totals shown for submitted films include films that were submitted, but disqualified. Films that were submitted, disqualified, and then resubmitted were counted only upon their initial submission.
  • Regarding countries that no longer exist: Totals for East Germany and West Germany are tallied with Germany, totals for the USSR are credited to Russia, and Czechoslovakian films are credited to the Czech Republic. Totals for Yugoslavia, however, are still listed as Yugoslavia.
