It doesn't get much better than grapes when it comes to versatile, useful fruit capable of delivering a little something for everyone. Grapes are delicious, nutritious, and refreshing when enjoyed on their own. They’re also prime components in multiple other iconic food items like raisins, jelly, and wine.
However, despite the fact that grapes are enjoyed and appreciated in nearly every nation worldwide, not all countries are equal when it comes to grape production. Here’s a closer look into the world’s top grape producers.
In 2023, the following countries were some of the top grape producers in the world.
Although China is consistently one of the world’s top grape-producing countries, it actually topped the entire list in 2023 and yielded 14,842,680 tons of the juicy treat. That accounts for about 15 percent of global grape production that year.
Italy was the world’s second-largest grape cultivator, even though it produced significantly fewer grapes than China did – 8,513,643 tons.
The United States is another country that consistently produces a lot of grapes annually. In 2023, it was responsible for adding around 6,890,970 tons to the world’s supply of the fruit.
Spain came in fourth with 5,745,450 tons of grapes.
Additional countries that routinely produce large quantities of grapes annually include but are not limited to Australia, South Africa, Chile, Turkey, and Peru. Currently, the top exporters of grapes worldwide are Peru, Italy, Chile, and – of course – China.
The production of agricultural goods like grapes is always subject to outside influences of various types. Here are a few key examples that can affect how many grapes a particular country produces from year to year.
Although ideal conditions can vary from one grape varietal to the next (especially when it comes to wine grapes), grapes generally fare best in climates that are warm without being hot. Grapes also require lots of water and moisture to grow well.
Grapes also require nourishing soil in which to grow, so access to plenty of fertilizer is key. Grapevines are also fairly prone to pests, disease, molds, and similar problems, so easy access to reliable treatments is imperative. Access to growing tech and supplies like trellising structures is important, too.
Grapes and their products are frequently large parts of a producing country’s cultural traditions. For example, countries like France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, and parts of the United States are world-famous for their signature approaches to wine-making. These traditions (or lack thereof) strongly influence a country’s grape production rates.
