Sufi Population by Country 2024

  • Membership in the Sufi order often overlaps with Sunni and Shia identities. As such, many Sufis may decline to describe themselves as Sufis or claim Sufi membership. Self-identified Sufis are most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, but exact populations and percentages are unclear.
  • Data on Shia and Sunni populations was collected from 1960 to 2013, though some countries did not participate every year and other countries may have been excluded entirely.
  • Percentages shown for Sunni and Shia Muslims represent the percentage of individuals within the total population who identify as Shia or Sunni. Only in countries in which the entire population is either Shia or Sunni Muslim will the percentages add up to 100%.
