The stock market is a collection of publicly held company exchanges. These exchanges represent shares that are bought and sold by investors. This is a highly regulated system and is one that is affected by many things, such as the health of the economy, a company’s financial status, and more.
Currently, the largest stock market in the US is the New York Stock Exchange as well as the NASDAQ. The goal of these markets is to create what is known as a free market that allows traders to invest and exchange capital with a variety of businesses. Many countries around the world are able to participate in the stock exchange. The United States is the country that has the largest number of investors. Approximately 58% of those who actively use the stock market are from the United States. In terms of overall market cap, that equaled 40.3 trillion US$ in 2022.
Another country that has a significant stock market presence is China with the overall market cap of 11.5 trillion US$ in 2022. Other countries on the list include Japan at $5.4T, Hong Kong at $4.6T, and India at $3.6T. The United Kingdom falls just out of the top five countries with a stock market presence with a total market cap of $3.1T.
The next two countries on the list are Canada and Saudi Arabia at $2.7T and $2.6T, respectively. France follows with $2.4T. Some of the other countries that have a significant total market cap include Germany, Switzerland, and Australia at $1.9T, $1.8T, and $1.7T, respectively.
When it comes to the companies listed on the stock market, there are companies listed from all around the world. As of 2022, China tops the list with 11,497 companies. In addition to these companies, 2,414 companies were from Hong Kong. The United States has the second highest number of companies. In 2022, the US had 4,642 companies listed on the stock market. Japan wasn’t far behind this number. There were 3,865 domestic companies on the list from Japan in 2022.
On the flip side, some countries do not have any or have low numbers of companies listed on the stock exchange. For example, Serbia and Algeria currently have no companies listed while Cayman Islands, Eswatini, Lebanon, Bermuda, and Costa Rica all have 10 or fewer companies listed on the stock exchange.
