The stock market is a collection of publicly held company exchanges. These exchanges represent shares that are bought and sold by investors. This is a highly regulated system and is one that is affected by many things, such as the health of the economy, a company's financial status, and more.
Currently, the largest stock market in the US is the New York Stock Exchange as well as the NASDAQ. The goal of these markets is to create what is known as a free market that allows traders to invest and exchange capital with a variety of businesses. Many countries around the world are able to participate in the stock exchange. The United States is the country that has the largest number of investors. Approximately 58% of those who actively use the stock market are from the United States. In terms of overall market cap, that equaled 44,719,661 in million US$ in 2020.
Another country that has a significant stock market presence is Japan. 6.3% of those who use the stock market are from the country of Japan. Other countries on the list include the United Kingdom at 4.1%, China at 3.7%, and France at 2.8%. The country of Canada falls just out of the top five countries with a stock market presence with a market value of 2.7%.
The next two countries on the list are Switzerland and Australia at 2.5% and 2.2%, respectively. Germany follows with 2.1% of the market. The remaining countries that have a presence on the stock market include India, Taiwan, and South Korea at 1.8%, 1.6%, and 1.3% respectively.
When it comes to the companies listed on the stock market, there are companies listed from all around the world. As of 2020, the United States had the highest number of companies on the list. At that time, the US had 4,266 companies listed on the stock market. China wasn't far behind this number, however. There were 4,154 domestic companies on the list from China in 2020. In addition to these companies, 2,353 companies were from Hong Kong.
On the flip side, there are some countries that do not have any or that have low numbers of companies listed on the stock exchange. For example, the countries of Serbia and Algeria currently have no companies listed while Rwanda, Cayman Islands, Papua New Guinea, Eswatini, Lebanon, and Costa Rica all have 10 or fewer companies listed on the stock exchange.
