Watermelon is a delicious produce item that is often seen as a great treat. Not only is it hydrating, but it can also provide you with nutrients and a cure for a sweet tooth. Many countries around the world produce watermelons throughout the year, some more than others. In this article, we will take a closer look at which countries produce the most watermelon and which produce the least based on 2023 statistics.
The country that produces far more watermelons than any other in the world is China. The country produced 60.1 million watermelons in 2023, which is significantly more than the second-place country, India, which only produced 3.5 million. India and Iran came next on the list with India producing 2.8 million watermelons and Iran producing 2.7 million.
Algeria and Brazil were also two countries that produced over 2 million watermelons in 2023. In Algeria, 2.3 million watermelons were produced whereas Brazil produced 2.2 million. Several countries produced over a million watermelons in 2023, including Senegal at 1.7 million, Russia at 1.6 million, Egypt and Vietnam both with 1.5 million, Mexico at 1.4 million, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan both with 1.3 million, and Spain with 1.2 million watermelons produced.
All other countries on the list produced far less than a million watermelons, including several countries that didn't produce any at all. The countries of Luxembourg, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany all produced zero watermelons in 2023.
There are also several countries that produced only a small amount of watermelons in 2023, such as the Cook Islands, which produced 64, and Djibouti, which produced 70. Antigua and Barbuda produced 94 and Saint Kitts and Nevis at 152 was the final country to produce fewer than 200 watermelons in 2023.
Although still low in numbers, many countries produced between 200 and 1000 watermelons in 2023. Bahrain at 223, Brunei at 283, Saint Lucia at 401, Tonga at 448, Qatar at 474, Slovenia at 620, Kuwait at 669, and Poland at 900 all fall into this group of countries.
One of the great things about watermelons is that they can grow in just about any soil type, which is why so many countries around the world can grow them. However, they do require to be planted in warm soil, which is why some countries aren't able to produce them on a large scale.
