Colombia Overview

Colombia has 4 cities with more than a million people, 36 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 265 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Colombia is Bogota, with a population of 7,674,366 people.

Colombia is the 26th largest country in the world by area, and it has the population to match. As of 2016, this country is the 30th most populous in the world with a total population exceeding 46 million people. To make up a population this large, Colombia has many major cities that contribute to this high number. Bogota is the most populous city with a population of over 7 million people. It isn’t the only city that has passed the 1,000,000 mark, though, as this country has three other cities that have more than one million inhabitants. There are also 36 cities that have populations that are over 100,000, and another 255 that have populations that have hit at least 10,000. Together, combined with the country’s rural population, smaller cities and towns, this adds up to the population that has made this one of the largest countries in the world.

In 1960, the rural population of Colombia was 55%. This number was less than half of that as of 2015, with an estimated 24% of the Colombia population residing outside of urban areas. This number has declined as migrants are moving into the bigger cities, while natives are also heading into the cities, which are themselves experiencing growth and expansion. As it stands, Colombia has a steady population growth rate that will only make the population of the country as a whole and its major cities even larger heading into the future.
