Bananas are one of the most popular types of fruit in the world. As a result, banana production can be an extremely lucrative industry for a country. Let’s take a look at some of the top banana producers globally.
Country | Banana Production 2022 (t) |
---|---|
India | 34.5M |
China | 11.8M |
Indonesia | 9.2M |
Nigeria | 8M |
Brazil | 6.9M |
Ecuador | 6.1M |
Philippines | 5.9M |
Guatemala | 4.8M |
Angola | 4.6M |
Tanzania | 3.5M |
You might have thought that the country producing the most bananas per year would probably be in South America, but this is not the case. In 2022, India produced a total of 34.5 million tons of bananas. This makes India the number one producer of bananas in the world by a significant margin. India produces over 20 million more tons of bananas per year than the number two country on this list.
One country that you might not have expected to be high on the list of banana production by country is China, which is number two on that list. China produces 11.8 million tons of bananas per year, as of 2022 data. Looking at this amount per person, China produces 8.37 kilograms of bananas per person per year. China’s banana cultivation area has been declining, with approximately 334,134 hectares recorded in 2023 and around 323,000 hectares in 2024, according to recent agricultural data.
Indonesia is the third-largest producer of bananas globally. In 2022, Indonesia produced a total of 9.2 million tons of bananas. Counted per capita, this amounts to about 33.45 kilograms of bananas per person per year.
Interestingly, Indonesia is actually only eighth in the world when it comes to the amount of acreage devoted to banana production. Indonesia has approximately 188,000 hectares of acreage devoted to growing bananas in total. Brazil has significantly more hectares of acreage dedicated to banana production than Indonesia, placing third in the world by this metric.
In 2022, Nigeria produced about 8 million tons of bananas. This amounted to 36.7 kilograms of bananas per person. That year, Nigeria produced more bananas per person than major exporters like Brazil and Indonesia, despite exporting very little, meaning most of its banana production was likely consumed domestically.
One country that is probably less surprising on a list of banana production by country is the South American nation of Brazil. Brazil’s banana production totaled 6.9 million tons in 2022. That made for 32.09 kilograms of bananas per capita. 457,9 hectares of land were devoted for banana production in Brazil in 2022.
Ecuador is the sixth-largest banana producer in the world based on tons of bananas produced each year. The country produced 6.1 million tons of bananas in 2022. This amounted to 338.89 kilograms of bananas per person. Ecuador’s exceptionally high per capita banana production is largely due to its role as one of the world’s top banana exporters—most of its bananas are grown not for domestic consumption, but for international markets.
