Anguilla is classified as a British overseas territory, a designation that was originally given in 1980. This means that the region is under control of the United Kingdom and is not independent. Anguilla is one of the Leeward Islands and is located in the Caribbean.

Anguilla is made up of the main island along with smaller islands and cays. These smaller areas do not have a permanent population. On the main island, there are approximately 14,764 inhabitants based on estimates taken in 2016. The territory has an area of 35 square miles, making the population density just under 342 people per square mile.

The capital is The Valley, which is also the largest town. The population of this town is just over 1,000 people.

The majority of the population – specifically, over 90% -- is black. Most inhabitants are descendants of African slaves. Other ethnic groups found in this island territory include whites and people of mixed races. Nearly three-quarters of the population is native-born. The remaining 28% hail from nations including the United States, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the United Kingdom.

There are many religions practiced throughout Anguilla. Christianity is the dominant religion. Churches on the island include Anglican, Methodist, Seventh-day Adventist, and Roman Catholic.

The Anguillans speak English, but this isn’t the only language spoken on the island. Other languages spoken in this territory include Spanish, Chinese, and Creole.
