He started off as a regular general but was promoted to command the Army of the West. When the army of the Potomac was having trouble winning even a single battle, Abraham Lincoln placed Ulysses S. Grant in charge of all armies. He also traveled with the army of the Potomac, even though George Meade was still in command of that specific army. Ulysses S Grant went on to serve two terms as president of the United States, taking over for Andrew Johnson, who was nearly removed from office.
Thomas Jefferson is on the nickel, and he is also on the two-dollar bill, although that is rarely, if ever, seen in circulation. Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He is also the author of the Declaration of Independence, even though many other people had some input into this sacred document. He presided over one of the largest expansions of the country in its history. He is responsible for the Louisiana Purchase, and he supported a lot of settlers as they tried to tame the West. Looking back at the prior presidents of the United States, Thomas Jefferson is usually placed close to the top of the list.
