The background of North Dakota’s state flag is blue. The design in the center features many colors, including gold, red, white, green and brown. The banner at the bottom of the flag is red and gold with “North Dakota” written in white text.

History of the Flag

The state flag of North Dakota was inspired by the banner carried by the state’s troops during the Philippine-American War. The flag was officially adopted on March 3, 1911 as the state’s flag. The colors were not specified when the flag was first adopted. A law in 1943 changed the design slightly of the flag to make it more similar to the troop banner. This version was officially adopted on November 9, 1943 and has remain unchanged ever since.
