Floods can be devastating, and people around the world must have an understanding of their flood risk. The risk of flooding around the world has gone up over time due to rising sea levels, global climate change, and other issues, including an increased risk of dangerous weather.
In China, 27.5% of the population lives in areas at a high risk of flooding. Slightly more people in India are at high risk of being affected by a flood, with nearly 28% of the population living in areas where flooding is likely. In Bangladesh, more than half of the population—nearly 58%—of residents are in danger of being affected by a flood.
Other countries that have many citizens at risk include Pakistan, with 31% of its citizens living in areas that are likely to flood. Egypt has 40% of its citizens at risk of being affected by a flood. 36.8% of Iraqi citizens live in areas where flooding is likely.
Many people in Europe also live in areas where flooding is a high possibility. 18% of people in Germany live in areas where they’re at increased likelihood of flooding compared to other areas. 13% of Russians live in a high-risk flood area, as well as 11% of people who live in Spain.
Being aware of living in a high flood risk area can be the first step toward staying safe. People who live in high-risk areas need to have an escape plan that allows them to move to higher ground when flooding occurs. Keeping an eye on the weather is also important, as it may be necessary to vacate an area before heavy rains begin, as mudslides and other issues related to heavy rains can make travel impossible. It’s smart to keep an eye on these changes over time, as many areas become susceptible to flooding due to rising sea levels.
