The youngest age at first marriage by country comes from Chad in Central Africa. With couples usually marrying around age 19 (19.2) here, it stands apart from many other nations around the world where the average marriage age is creeping higher.
In many nations, we see a trend of people waiting longer until they marry. Countries like Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Croatia, the average marriage age is over 30.
In countries where the age of the first marriage isn't yet 30, it seems to be quickly approaching that number. The United States, North Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Poland, and Montenegro, the age at first marriage is around 26-29.
With people marrying later in life overall, we are beginning to see a trend in midlife marriage (first marriage) between ages 40-59, which quadrupled between 1990 and 2019 in the United States alone.
