Romania has 1 cities with more than a million people, 29 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 189 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Romania is Bucharest, with a population of 1,877,155 people.

Located in southeast Europe, Romania is famous for its medieval towns, numerous castles and, of course, being home to Prince Vlad III, better known as Vlad The Impaler, the inspiration for the Dracula legend. Bucharest is the country’s capital and most populous city, as well as its administrative and economic center. The city is situated on the Dâmbovița River, around 60 kilometers north of the Danube River and the Bulgarian border, and has a population of 2,412,530 residents in its urban area. During the interwar period, Bucharest was known as ‘Little Paris’ for its culture and architecture. Today, its buildings are a mix of neo-classical, art deco, communist-era and modern.

The city of Iași is regarded as the cultural capital of Romania, and has a population of 362,142, making it the second-largest city in the country. Iași is also an important educational center, and it is home to the oldest university in Romania. One of the country’s smaller, but most well-known, cities is Sighișoara. Located in the Transylvania region, the city has a population of around 30,000 residents. However, its walled old town, built in the twelfth century but still well-preserved, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making Sighișoara a popular tourist destination.
