In an increasingly connected digital-age society, a computer is considered a necessity in many nations worldwide. This is especially the case as computers become bigger parts of how people in multiple countries work, learn, and stay connected to other people.
However, computer distribution is by no means globally consistent yet, even in 2023. Here’s a closer look at how the average number of computers per capita varies from country to country.
In 2023, not only is global computer use more widespread, but individuals are more likely to own and use more than one computer apiece. The following are some of the world leaders in that regard.
With approximately 864.58 computers for every 1,000 people, Switzerland is the current world leader in per capita computer distribution. In Switzerland, computers are considered essential parts of daily life with most people using at least one daily.
As one of the world’s leaders in technology, the United States boasts one of the higher rates of computer ownership per capita with around 94 percent of households owning at least one computer. Contributing factors include cultural values that support robust digital literacy, a high average income, and easy access to computers and other devices.
Like the U.S., South Korea is fairly well-known for being technologically advanced with an internet penetration rate of 97.6 percent, so it also has a higher rate of computer distribution per capita in 2023.
Other countries with high rates of per capita computer ownership include Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Singapore.
The most crucial factor affecting a country’s average rate of per capita computer ownership is overall economic development. Countries that are more developed and advanced in this regard also reflect greater accessibility and affordability when it comes to computers.
Here are some additional contributing factors to keep in mind.
The more important a nation’s people consider technology and connectedness to be, the more likely that country is to show a higher number of computers per capita.
As computers need reliable power sources and internet connections in order to function at full capacity, countries with stronger technological infrastructures are more likely to boast higher computers per capita rates.
Literate, well-educated societies are much more likely to not only use computers but fully embrace everything they’re capable of, leading to higher national computer ownership rates.
