Northern Hemisphere Countries 2024

The planet can be divided in multiple ways, making it easier to categorize certain locations. One option is to divide the planet into northern and southern hemispheres. The northern hemisphere refers to everything that is located north of the equator. Then, the southern hemisphere refers to everything that is located south of the Equator. Therefore, there are several continents that are located in the northern hemisphere. North America, the northern part of South America, and all of Europe are located in the northern hemisphere. In addition, the vast majority of Asia and two-thirds of Africa are located in the northern hemisphere. Some of the largest countries in the world can be found in the northern hemisphere.

What Countries Are In the Northern Hemisphere?

There are several significant countries that are located in the northern hemisphere. A few examples of countries that are located in the northern hemisphere, in alphabetical order, include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greenland, Hungary, India, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Ukraine, and the United States. Of note, the entire United States is located in the northern hemisphere. This also includes states such as Alaska and Hawaii.

Is the Northern Hemisphere Colder Than the Southern Hemisphere?

Because of the way the hemispheres are labeled, there are a lot of people who believe that the northern hemisphere is instinctively cold, while the southern hemisphere is instinctively hot. In reality, that is not necessarily the case. When the Earth rotates, it rotates on a slight tilt. This means that as the earth goes around the sun, one hemisphere is exposed to the sun more than the other during one half of the year. Then, the roles flip during the other half of the year. As a result, during the first half of the year, the northern hemisphere might be colder than the southern hemisphere. Then, during the second half of the year, the southern hemisphere is actually colder than the northern hemisphere. That is because one hemisphere might be slightly farther away from the Sun than the other, contributing to the temperature difference.

What Countries in the Northern Hemisphere Are Safe?

The good news is that there are plenty of countries in the northern hemisphere that are perfectly safe to visit. For example, the United States and Canada are both located in the northern hemisphere. These are two of the largest tourist destinations in the world. In addition, the vast majority of Europe is located in the northern hemisphere. Countries like France, Germany, and Great Britain are perfectly safe to visit. Much of Asia is also located in the northern hemisphere, which means that Japan is also safe to visit. Even though people need to take a look at information provided by the State Department before deciding whether to go somewhere, many countries in the northern hemisphere are safe for people to visit.

  • States with the "Territory" tag may be any of several possible non-sovereign designations, including (but not limited to) territories, partially recognized states, UK crown dependencies, or Chinese special administrative regions.
  • The exact number of countries and territories in any given hemisphere varies according to each source's definition of a country. For example, the United Nations, the most widely cited authority, recognizes 193 countries and two observer states (Palestine and Vatican City/Holy See). However, the International Football Association (FIFA) recognizes 211 countries, many of which are classified as territories by the UN.
