Niue2016
  • Country-level international debt is made up of two major components: public debt, which is the debt owed to foreign creditors by the country’s government, and private debt, which is the debt owed to foreign creditors by the the country’s private residents or corporations.
  • Only two sovereign states in the world are believed to be completely free of debt: Liechtenstein and Niue.
  • However, most countries are both debtors and creditors, owing money to some countries at the same time they are owed money by other countries. If one were to compare the amount of money each country owes to the amount that it is owed by other countries, additional countries would show a positive debt balance.
