Pesticide Usage by Country 2024

During the past few years, there has been a major push to get countries to reduce their pesticide usage. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of countries that use a tremendous number of pesticides annually. By far, China uses more pesticides than any other country on Earth. Every year, China uses approximately 1,806 million kg of pesticides. There is no other country on Earth that uses more than 400 million kilograms of pesticides. The United States is second on the list, and it uses approximately 386 million kilograms of pesticides every year. This is followed closely by Argentina, which uses 265 million kilograms of pesticides every year. There is no other country that uses more than 100 million kilograms of pesticides.

Why Do Farmers Like To Use Pesticides?

There are a few reasons why farmers like to use pesticides. The biggest reason why farmers like to use pesticides is that this is an easy way for them to protect their crops. A lot of farmers do not like to have pests that are props before they can sell them. Farmers have been looking for a way to kill the animals that eat their crops without harming the crops themselves. One of the easiest ways to do so is to use pesticides. There are plenty of pesticides that have been specifically designed to kill pests that eat the crops without harming the crops or the people that eat them. Farmers also like to use pesticides because they are a cost-effective option. Farmers do not need to worry about spending too much money on pesticides.

Why Are Pesticides Bad?

On the other hand, a significant amount of research that has been done during the past few years has shown that pesticides can actually be bad. For example, pesticides do have the potential to harm people if they are not careful about how they are sprayed. Even though crops will be washed before they are eaten, it is still possible for farmers to get sick from pesticides when they are spraying them on their crops. Pesticides are also bad because they can wash into the water supply. As a result, they can harm animals that drink the water and people who use that water for cooking, bathing, and drinking. For this reason, there has been a major push to reduce the number of pesticides that countries use.

Why Does China Still Use So Many Pesticides?

Clearly, China uses more pesticides than any other country on Earth. The biggest reason why China uses so many pesticides is that there are a lot of people. China has approximately five times the population of the United States, so it has to grow more food. Furthermore, there are some parts of China that are still developing. As a result, they may not have alternatives to pesticides for farming their crops. It will be interesting to see if China takes steps to reduce its pesticide usage in the near future.

  • Data are statistical estimates, typically based upon imports and domestic production of agricultural insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, bactericides, rodenticides, and other pesticides.
  • Agricultural Use totals have been rounded to the nearest whole ton.
  • Use per area of cropland: kg/ha (kilograms per hectare)
  • Use per capita: kg/cap (kilograms per capita)
  • Use per value of agricultural production: g/Int$ (grams per international dollar)
