The acronym IDB stands for International Database, which is a tool used by the United States to make population estimates and projections for 200 countries, incorporating various demographic indicators. According to the IDB, the world population is expected to reach 8 billion by the end of 2023. In the United States, the population increases every twenty-seven seconds, a calculation based on births, deaths, and new international migration. By mid-2023, it’s anticipated that the United States population will reach about 400 million people, representing 4.23% of the global population. The United States Census further projects that this number will increase to 323 million by 2050.
In Asia, significant population changes are observed in countries like India and China. Since 1950, India’s population has surged by more than 1 billion people and is expected to continue rising for at least the next three decades. The United Nations predicts that India’s population will exceed 1.6 billion by 2050. In contrast, China experienced a slight population decline of 0.02% between 2022 and 2023. Despite having a current population of over 1.4 billion, United Nations forecasts indicate a continued decline, with China’s population projected to be around 1.3 billion by 2050.
Other notable population trends are seen in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Indonesia’s population reached 277,534,122 in 2023, marking an increase from the previous year. Projections for 2050 estimate the population at 288 million, rising to 320 million by 2100. Nigeria, over the last fifty years, has witnessed a staggering 384.2% increase in its population, primarily attributed to high birth and fertility rates. The United Nations estimates a population of 401 million in Nigeria by 2050. Pakistan, the fifth most populated country globally, currently has a population of 240,485,658. However, the population growth rate in Pakistan is expected to decelerate in the coming decades, with an estimated population of 403 million by 2050.
