What Is Vitamin B17?

Vitamin B17 is also known as amygdalin. It is a compound that can be found in a variety of fruits. Some of the most common fruits that contain this substance include apples, apricots, red cherries, plums, and peaches. Typically, humans do not ingest vitamin B17 because they cannot adjust the pit safely. Vitamin B17 can also be found in bitter almonds.

During the past few years, there has been a significant amount of attention paid to vitamin B17. Because it is called a vitamin, a lot of people claim that it is safe. There are some people who say that it can even be used to cure certain types of cancer. On the other hand, it is not necessarily safe for people to use.

Is Vitamin B17 Legal in the United States?

Even though vitamin B17 can be found naturally in a variety of fruits, there was also a man-made version of this vitamin produced. It was called Laetrile, and it was actually patented in the 1950s. During the next few decades, it became popular as an alternative form of treatment for certain types of cancer. While it was widely used in some circles during the 1960s and 1970s, it is now banned by the FDA. It has not been available in the United States since 1980. Therefore, it is not legal in the United States, and it is not endorsed by any medical groups for the treatment of any disease, which includes cancer. Even though there are some websites that tout the benefits of vitamin B17, amygdalin, and its numerous other names (such as nitriloside and purasin), there simply is no proof that it is effective against these diseases.

Is Vitamin B17 Considered Dangerous?

Yes, this compound should be considered extremely dangerous. The biggest reason why vitamin B17 is dangerous is that it could cause cyanide poisoning. When it is ingested and broken down by the human body, one of the byproducts can be cyanide, which is one of the most potent poisons known to man. Furthermore, this compound can cause your blood pressure to drop to very dangerous levels. It also has the potential to damage your liver. Some of the other symptoms of toxicity include headaches, blue skin, drooping eyelids, trouble walking, confusion, and dizziness. In some cases, it could be fatal.

Is There Research on Vitamin B17?

There is not a lot of active research being conducted, but animal and lab studies have been done. There are some studies that have shown vitamin B17 does not have any health benefits. There are other studies that show that it could have a slight effect on cancer cells. Some studies also show that it could be effective at alleviating certain types of pain. There have not been any controlled clinical trials on vitamin B17 because it is so dangerous.
