Pennsylvania has a population of 12.8 million people, making it the 5th most populous state in the nation. The most populated city and the only one in the state with a population exceeding 1 million is Philadelphia, which has a population of over 1.5 million. The state has two cities with populations of more than 100,000: Pittsburgh with 304,391 inhabitants and Allentown with 120,207 inhabitants. The state has 65 cities with populations that exceed 10,000 but fall below 100,000, including the state capital of Harrisburg, which is ranked 9th in terms of population.
The state has a total of 57 cities. These cities are broken down into three different classes: first class, second class and third class. The class of a city in Pennsylvania is determined by population and ordinances. Some cities have implemented Home Rule Charters which make them no longer cities under the state law, but they are still named as such for classification. Parker, Pennsylvania, is the smallest city in Pennsylvania, and it’s also been nicknamed as the Smallest City in the USA, with a population of just 840 people.
